A wonderful race won by a future champion, but a race marred by the tragic end to a true brave warrior.
Geeorb led from the start, Hooker Road was fired up early and pressured Geeorb into increasing the pace, Hooker Road settled in the box seat after a lap. Pentiffic, the race favourite settled mid-field. At the first of the double on the second lap Sir Pentire got in close to the jump and almost fell. the order stayed the same for another lap. with 5 furlongs to go Hooker Road went up to pressure Geeorb for the lead, Geeorb quickened and took off too early and low at the 2nd last jump and fell, at the last jump Pentiffic hooked out to make his run, Tainui Teina jumped awkwardly and lost his rider, Frenzillian was hampered and his rider Adrian Lechmere lost his Irons. rounding the turn with a flat run to the finish, Pentiffic was too strong for the tiring Hooker Road and ran in an easy win with Sir Pentire, a half brother to the winner running a great race to finish 3rd. Just metres from the finish, jockey Adrian Lechmere who was trying to re-gain his stirrups lost his balance and fell heavily, what would have been a harmless fall was made worse by the fact that he had regained one stirrup, but when falling his foot was momentarily caught which tipped him over, he suffered nothing more than a sore shoulder and a bump on the head and just a little embarassment. Geeorb who fell at the second last jump broke his shoulder and was put-down, animal rights protesters who were close by rushed over to take photos of the stricken horse, one wonders if these people have hearts at all. Geeorb was a grand horse, he never once gave up in any of his races, he will be sadly missed.
